As homeowners, with any energy improvement project, we need to really figure out how much money the investment would save us, each year, and then decide if it’s worth the investment.
We have a list of 9 money saving ideas that you as a homeowner can implement. They are definitely an alternative to a large upfront investment to reduce your monthly costs.
• Have your furnace checked out and cleaned by a professional furnace expert. This will be a cost to you but it will result in your furnace being more efficient and should positively impact your heating bills.

• When you use your washing machine and dishwasher, make sure you do full loads only. The machines are more efficient that way and will use less energy.
• Consider using fluorescent Lighting. Not everyone is a fan of this type of light but these bulbs use less than half of the energy of conventional light bulbs.
• Make sure your water heater is insulated. This is particularly true for older models. Insulation helps the unit retain heat and can save up to $50.00 a year.
• A programmable thermostat is a must for all households. This will enable you to control the heat in your house while you are sleeping and away.
• Take advantage of natural sunlight, and warmth, and keeps your shades and blinds open when the sun is out.
• If you notice drafts or air leaks in rooms of your home you need to seal them up with caulk or weather strips. As homeowners we miss this problem frequently.
